Dr. José Rizal

The First Filipino

The Hand as Well as the Pen

Paintings, Sketches & Sculptures

He drew what he saw and modelled what he thought. A working catalogue of the visual art of José Rizal.

Sculptures

The Triumph of Science over Death

A nude female figure standing upon a skull, torch aloft — a clay allegory made in 1890 and sent to Blumentritt. Its companion piece, The Triumph of Death over Life, was made at the same time.

Prometheus Bound

A wax study upon the classical theme of the punished bringer of fire.

The Mother's Revenge

A clay group of a dog defending her pup, modelled after an incident at Dapitan.

Bust of Father Guerrico

A portrait bust of one of his Ateneo professors, carved as a student.

Josephine Bracken

A small bust modelled in Dapitan during the last years of his exile.

Drawings & Paintings

Travel diaries

Rapid pen studies of harbours, buildings, costumes, and fellow passengers, made from Singapore to San Francisco.

Natural history plates

Careful drawings of shells, insects, and reptiles — some of the species he collected in Dapitan were named for him.

Illustrations for the Noli

The frontispiece design for his first novel was his own.

The Monkey and the Turtle

A sequence of drawings for the Filipino folk tale, made for a European review.

Maps & Plans

Relief map of Mindanao

Built out of earth and stone in the Dapitan church plaza toward the end of 1892, with his pupils as labourers.

Plan of the Dapitan waterworks

Drawn with Father Sánchez in 1895; bamboo and clay pipe carried water into the town.

Plan for a modern college

Front and side elevations for a school he hoped to build in Hong Kong or Borneo.

The lake district of central Luzon

A student's map, mentioned in his Manila memoirs.

Pacific spheres of influence

Drawn in London in 1889 in connection with his essay The Philippines a Century Hence — a forecast of great-power rivalry in the Pacific that proved uncomfortably accurate.

Plates of the Visual Work
